Spirit Guides In Igbo Spirituality.

Igbo Traditional spirituality and belief systems exists before the advent and spread of Christianity and Islam et al. Igbos and Africans believed and continued to believe in the eternal and ubiquitous spirit of the ancestors and the Great One. Spiritual guides are not always of human descent. Some spirit guides live as energy, in the cosmic realm, or as light beings, which are very high level spirit guides. Some spirit guides are persons who have lived many former lifetimes, paid their karmic debts, and advanced beyond a need to reincarnate. Many devotees believe that spirit guides are chosen on “the other side” by humans who are about to incarnate and wish assistance.

Followers of traditional Igbo and African spirituality pray to various spirits as well as to their ancestors. This includes nature, elementary and animal spirits. The difference between powerful spirits and gods is often minimal. Most Igbo and African societies believe in several higher gods and lower gods and spirits. There are some spirituality with a single supreme being like Chukwu, Nyame, Olodumare, Ngai, Roog, among others. Some recognize a dual god and goddess such as Chi na Eke. Traditional Igbo spirituality believe in reincarnation and an afterlife, one or more Spirit worlds.

Since ancient times, the role of the spiritual guides remains the center of esoteric traditions. There is necessity of a spiritual preceptor who has immediate knowledge of the laws of spiritual development and who can glean from the adept’s actions and attitudes, the spiritual path as well as the impediments that lie ahead. The spiritual guides are responsible for preserving and advancing the precise understanding of the teaching and spiritual discipline including a written tradition and an oral tradition which is passed on from one generation to another, from a master to succeeding master according to their level of insight.

Spiritual guides are beings that have transitioned into the afterlife. Rather than reincarnate on earth again, they chose to dedicate their existence to being spirit guides as a way of continuing their soul’s evolution. This is a high honor as not everyone have the option of becoming a spirit guide. We are paired with the spirit guides that can best serve us right from birth and through ancestral lineages. Spiritual guides know us better than we know ourselves. They are wonderful, helpful energies guiding us in spiritual journey, healing and growth.
