Mother-Earth: Ajana Igbo.

Ajana connotes the earth/sand you walk on while you step on solid ground. It is mainly ascribed as a female deity, called Nne Ani (mother earth) that is inter-connected with CHUKWU OKIKE OBIỌMA and Amadioha. The pronunciation or spelling differs according to various Igbo dialect. Some pronounce Aja-ani, Ajana, Ajani, Ajala depending on “Igbo na-asụ asụsụ Igbo n’olu n’olu”. Ajana is in sub categories but they are same. The differentiation is necessary due to spiritual works and how to go about it.

1. AJANA NGWULU (Nke Bee Nna gị)

AJANA NGWULU is in charge of every children born into a specific family. Ndị ichie Ngwulu takes care of the upkeep of every child born in that family. Every family has Aja-ani or Ndị Ani that guides, protects and fights for them. If your ancestors are known for nkà n’uzu your ancestors (ndi ichie) will ensure that talent or ability does not die off in your family. They will always transcend the gift by choosing the next person in-line to ensure continuity in that lineage.
Ajani Ngwulu possesses healing powers. In rare cases of untreatable ailments, once you go home and step with both feet on the ground, in village or Aja-ani bee Nna gị, one is healed miraculously.

I recall when I was poisoned, I was taken to many places and hospitals, then I was attending imported Christian religion, church, all hope was lost. I had to tell the doctor to discharge me so my people can take me back to my paternal village and I die peacefully. I was taken home and not quite 3 days, Ndị Ichie Nwe Ani came to visit me and they were 4 in number, they worked on my body spiritually, I was taken down, deep into the ground, like there is another world underneath and brought out again before a spiritual tree in my father’s compound (physically, tree has been cut down) and certain rites where performed on my body. I recovered very fast under a week of homecoming. Actually, after that spiritual encounter I began to understand the word “Ọdịnanị”.

Ajana bee Nna is very strong and powerful. The reason, some spiritual works are done using sand gotten from your father’s or mother side as point of contact to exercise authority over the problem. It can be use for good or bad. Many spiritualists, pastors, evangelists etc knows how highly and spiritually efficacious it is. Ajani Ngwulu also relays message of imminent death of anyone, be it great or small person in that family. It gives sign to those who are spiritually awake.

2. AJANA MBALA. (VILLAGE SPIRIT)

This is the earth/sand of the entire village where you are indigenous to. Aja Ani is spirit which is controlled by Nne Ani (Mother Earth). Ndị ichie Ani gị oversees the entire village and everyone born there. For example, Awka has Ajana, both young and old born in my village, Aja-ani Ndị Ichie takes care of them. If there is something that will affect the entire village, the revealing spirits will visit Eze Mmụọ Ani Awka or Obu Ndị Ichie of that particular village, either through Ogwugwu, ours are Imoka, Ovufe. Solutions will be given to forestall that from happening.

3. AJA-ANI OBODO (TOWN SPIRIT)

From the beginning of the town’s landmarks to its boundary of your town. Aja-ani works hand in hand with all deities in that town. This is to ensure total protection, provision, blessing, equity, justice for her children of that particular town. Most communities celebrate Nne Ani yearly to thank her for her benevolence upon their land and their children and for a good harvest because she owns everything on that land. Every community or villages have Aja-ani. If you are an Ọdịnanị person you will need to locate your people’s Aja-ani, visit there periodically with items like Kolanuts, Nzu, Hot drink, Goat, ram etc to meet the Eze Mmụọ in charge of Aja-ani, then venerate Nne Ani Dị Asọ and seek for her blessings. Do not go empty handed.

There is differentiation between ajani obodo, ajani ngwulu and ajani mbala, but they are all interlinked. To illustrate further, for instance Dibịa Nwangwu Uchendu: I was born in Awka (Ajani Obodo) where in Awka? Ụmụayom village (Ajani mbala). Which kindred in Umuayom, Okpalanwoshi. Whose child? Late Onyechi Uchendu, my dad (ajani ngwulu).

In summary, all are Ajani. Do not forget that “Igbo na-asụ asụsụ Igbo n’olu n’olu”. There are specific spiritual works which need to be done appropriately in the right way and place. ie ịkpụ alụ (personal or general) , appeasing ndị Ichie, appeasing akwali ọmụmụ, Ikpochi onunu (personal or general) etc this is where the difference should be duly noted.

As an educator, I dissect every single detail for new learner’s in odinani to understand better.

Finally, take note that Mother earth is Supreme. She owns everything in this life, your body, properties, possessions etc. Anyone that dies, is lowered six feet under the ground. Aja-ani also fights for her children and strikes down evil doers when called upon by those that their hands are not tainted with blood or who have not committed any Nsọ Ani.
