The Concept Of Abstinence In Spirituality.

This is the practice of restraining oneself from indulging in somethings like alcohol or sex, the practice of abstaining from something or the practice of not doing something that is wanted or enjoyable could be long abstinence from food, habitual abstaining from intoxicating beverages, abstention from sexual intercourse. Abstinence means not having any kind of sex with a partner. Sex includes vaginal intercourse, oral sex, and anal sex. Oral sex is any kind of contact between the mouth and the genital. The definition of abstinence is choosing not to engage in a certain behavior and of not giving in to a desire or appetite.

An example of abstinence is a recovering alcoholic that no longer drinks. The practice of refraining from indulging a desire or appetite. Abstinence may be voluntary when an individual chooses not to engage in sexual activity due to moral, religious, philosophical, or other reasons. It can be an involuntary result of social circumstances when one cannot find any willing sexual partners or legally mandated for instance in countries where sexual activity outside marriage is illegal, in prisons etc. Abstinence is a self-enforced restraint from indulging in bodily activities that are widely experienced as giving pleasure. Most times the term refers to sexual abstinence, but it also means abstinence from alcohol, drugs, food, etc.

KINDS OF ABSTINENCE.

1. FASTING
Fasting is primarily the act of willingly abstaining from some or all food, drink, or both, for a period of time. A fast can be total or partial and may be prolonged or intermittent due to the period of fasting. Fasting practices may preclude sexual activity as well as food, refraining from eating certain types or groups of foods for example, one might refrain from eating meat. A complete fast in its traditional definition is abstinence of all food and liquids except for water.

2. VEGETARIANISM
Vegetarianism is the practice of a diet that excludes meat including game, marine mammals and slaughter by-products, poultry, fowl, fish, shellfish and other sea creatures. There are several variants of diet, some exclude eggs or products produced from animal labour such as dairy products and honey.

3. SEXUAL ABSTINENCE.
Sexual abstinence or sexual restraint is the practice of refraining from some or all aspects of sexual activity for medical, psychological, legal, social, financial, philosophical, moral, or religious reasons. Sexual abstinence is distinct from asexuality. Celibacy is sexual abstinence generally motivated by factors about an individual’s personal or religious beliefs. Sexual abstinence before marriage is required in some societies by social norms or by law in some countries. It is part of chastity. It is usually practiced by spiritualists to enable them focus on their spiritual works thus ensure its success.

4. PLEASURE.
A general abstinence from pleasures or leisure, either partial or full, may be motivated by ambition, career or general self respect.

6. DRUGS.
It is widely accepted that abstinence from addictive drugs gives successful outcome.

7. ALCOHOL.
Teetotalism is the practice and promotion of complete abstinence from alcoholic beverages. Some common reasons for choosing teetotalism are religious, health, family, philosophical or social reasons and a matter of taste preference. When drinking in pubs, they either abstain from drinking or consume non-alcoholic beverages such as tea, coffee, water, juice, and soft drinks. Some teetotaller organizations also demand from their members not promote or produce alcoholic intoxicants.

8. TOBACCO AND SMOKING CESSATION.
Smoking cessation is the action of discontinuing the consumption of smoked substance, mainly tobacco. It includes cannabis and other substances as well.

WHEN DO PEOPLE PRACTICE ABSTINENCE?
1. Abstain during days of fasting.
2. Abstain during days or months for spiritual works.
3. Abstain from sexual intercourse outside of marriage.
4. Abstain from sexual intercourse during the time of a woman’s menstruation.
5. Abstain to obtain and represent a virtuous lifestyle devoid of constant sexual urges. This includes simple living, meditation and other behaviors.
6. Abstain during in-patient treatment and rehabilitation or incarceration of a prisoner.
