Our Ikenga works together with our Chi and can be appeased together without having to separate the meal, drinks, ọjị and nzu.
Step 1. Find a suitable spot where you can see sunlight directly on your veranda, porch, sit-out or home. Make sure it is neat and swept, cleaned thoroughly. Proceed by marking a circle on that spot with Nzu/Efun/Kaolin/earth chalk. Get fresh 7 Ogilishi /Newbouldia leaves, drop inside the circle, let the leaves cover the circle. Cut 2 sizeable branches from same Ogilishi tree and use them as OKPOSI Chi and Ikenga (for those who do not have okposi Chi na Ikenga).
Step 2. Get alligator pepper open it behind your back and bring it to your front, collect the seeds either 1-2-4-7 and touch every single thing inside the line. Touch it to the leaves, the sticks representing ikenga and okposi Chi touch the lines and ask Orakwu, alụ, Nsị, evil to depart from the circle so they will be holy and sacred. Cleanse yourself too with oseoji/alligator pepper. Throw away the used oseoji far from the area.
Step 3.
Break the nzu and drop inside the circle. Drop four chunks inside and you are ready to start.
Step 4.
Start talking to your powers, talk to them with nzu. Pick nzu, rise it and show it to the sun, call on ANYANWU NA AGBALA/AGBARA and then touch it on the okposi and call your Chi by name (if you really know name) or say CHI M. Do same again and touch it on your ikenga okposi or Ogilishi branch, tell them you are the one calling. You are summoning them into the circle to stay there and be appeased. Say good words to your ikenga and Chi. Both are present and listening attentively. After nzu, do same with oji/kolanut Igbo. Use any size of oji but oke oji is preferable in this event. After breaking kolanut, chew one with oseoji and spit on them to awaken them. Drop one lobe on each of them and enjoy the rest with friends and family, if they are present.
Step 5.
Bring native fowl (egbene or oké okpa/nwunye okuku for females and ikenga excluded) hold both legs. Make sure there is no rope tied on both wings and legs. Then touch it inside the circle on them and then tell them, the fowl is for them. That you brought it in good faith. Say words to eulogize them. Proceed to kill it and drop all bloods on them. Pluck some of the feathers and drop on them.
Step 5.
Bring hot drink, pour out one shot then take a mouthful, splash out on them directly. Talk to them to wake just like you did with ọjị and oseoji. From the shot, drop little by little on them and ask them to drink with you and drink the last drop by yourself.
Step 6.
After the process, call your friends and family let them eat kolanut and drink with you. Cook the chicken as yam porridge using 4-8-12-16 tubers of yam. This depends on how many people that came. Or cook and pound the yam. Cook the fowl as Nsala soup. When the food is ready..
Step 7.
Bring out the head, legs, umeju and eke okuku from the pot and then take it into that very circle and give to them. Tell them that whomever owns animal for appeasement, owns isi and ukwu/head and legs. That you also offer them the liver and eke okuku. That you shall commune with them today and always shall if they shall ensure the next meal is fast. Make a deal with your own Chi and ikenga and it shall come to pass fast.
Step 8.
Make sure an agemate is around and if not, a good friend has to help retrieve the offered meats and small chunk of food and then eat them together with the retriever. One full leg (mpara okuku) shall be offered to the owner of the Ikenga and one to the age mate around. Retrieving the offered meal is called ISE PỤTA NRI/FOOD. But, if you there is nobody to help you do that ise pụta nri, use your left hand to retrieve them. It is easy to appease our Chi. Females will do same without ikenga inside. They do not use male fowl (oké ọkpa) but female (nnukwu nwunye Okuku). Use ọkụkọ IGBO. Males can also appease separately for ikenga and Chi, but both works together and can eat together. Assuming, your ikenga or Chi requested for goat, make sure the goat is offered and killed first before the fowl. Any mmuo that requested for goat, must have fowl along it. Give the goat first before the chicken or have another fowl after offering of goat, because you cannot offer him the chicken first and then goat afterwards. These are basic rules, be focused and guided to do it better.
NOTE: You will need the services of a Dibịa to do it for you for the first time to align you spiritually with your Chi and you will learn how to appease your Chi subsequently.
