Ngene: Ancestral Spirit And Protector.

Every family in Igbo society has a place dedicated to all ancestral spirits that are pillars and protectors in Igbo communities. Basically, they are covenanted by our forefathers who were more in tune with nature as the Almighty made it to be. Then religion had no place in Africa. Nature was venerated as man and the universe were in alignment. Observe carefully, if you grew up in Igbo community, in your father’s compound, try find out whether your father has a place dedicated to Ngene. A spot where he communicates with Ngene. Simply understand that your father prepared a place of communion and veneration for Ngene. Ngene is the ancestral spirit in charge of protection in every family. Our ancestors believed in having an altar (okwu mmụọ) for any spirit they align and communicate with. However, from time to time they give the spirit offering or sacrifice so that when ever they call on them, they answer.

We have 2 types of Ngene: Ngene Mmiri and Ngene Ndị ichie. Example: When you are having problem in your husband’s house and your father, brother or uncle ask you to come back home to table it to spirits in your father’s lineage, may be your husband is late and his brother’s wants to collect all the properties not minding that you have children for him, your family members may advise you not to fight them that you are a woman and do not really have much say in land matters, instead that you should return home to allow your ancestral spirits know about it, so they can fight for you. Upon return, your father, uncle or brother takes oji and palm wine and table the matter to the family’s ancestral spirits, it is Ngene ndi ichie that will go and fight the battle, he will start dealing with them one by one till they remove hands from it or he render their family, children useless or destroy their business.

Now, let me shed more light on Ngene mmiri.

Ngene mmiri is the spirit that usually protect mariners. Coincidentally, Ngene mmiri is where marine husband usually come from, for water priest and priestess (ndị owu mmiri) during spiritual alignment and appeasement of making peace between a marine husband and his earthly wife, Ngene mmiri must be consulted and honoured for everything to go smoothly. If not, it would not be 100% successful. Simultaneously, Ngene Ndi ichie and Ngene Mmiri performs same duties in a family. A woman does not eat things offered to Ngene, if she does, her mensuration will cease. Ngene is not alushi but some town do see him as alusi. He is an ancestral spirit for protection. Whenever any issue is tabled before ancestral spirits, it will also be tabled to Ngene because Ngene is the spirit which the ancestors and spirit guides will send forth to protect or fight for their own.

Ngene mmiri has many rivers, waters they occupy although such water bodies might bear different names during spiritual consultation it can be revealed. As long as a person is chosen to serve humanity and mankind, the chosen ones must be in alignment with Ngene mmiri and Ngene Ndị Ichie for more spiritual energy, revelation, spiritual backup incase of any spiritual arrows and for more spiritual vibrations in Ọdịnanị Igbo spirituality.
