Agwụ is a revelational force, the spirit of creativity and the patron deity that knows what Chukwu and the universe knows. Agwụ is the spirit of wisdom, divination, medicine, reincarnation, and purpose. Agwụ is the collective universal mind that oversees all knowing, learning, and becoming, done by living things and life forces. This Agwụ is the first in the chain of messaging from Chineke meaning that if Chineke has a message or a purpose for an individual, that message is embedded in Agwụ and Agwụ brings it to the human heart. Every living thing has Agwụ including all spirits and therefore Agwụ is able to exist in the world of spirits as well as the world of the living. Agwụ is what all Alusi use in communicating with the physical world. Agwụ is a direct cable into the mind of CHUKWU and all deities that exists. Agwụ is the one that holds everyone’s destiny and everyone’s ability to be creative and unique. It comes with your Onye Ụwa (incarnator) to fulfill your destiny or purpose in life.

Everything you seek to know and understand is already deep, within your mind. Looking within, one is able to pull from an infinite well of wisdom. This deep mind is known as Agwụ. Once a person learns to communicate and draw from their Agwụ they become a Dibia (the master of what is to come). Agwụ is the spirit of the Dibia, a source of the sacred and universal wisdom. Everyone has an Onye ụwa , but when a person’s incarnate purpose is to become a Dibịa, the person’s Onye uwa is referred to as one’s agwụ and life force. Any person with Agwụ often feels they have one foot in the spiritual world and the other in the physical.
Individuals with Agwụ are born with deep and active intuition and a heightened ability to sense spirits and spiritual presences that supersede the average person. When Agwụ chooses a person, their lives are filled with calamity, misfortune, failure, disappointment and tragedy among others. Some become ill and struggle with socializing as well as financial difficulties. They feel an increasing detachment from the world throughout life and a greater sense of purpose. If the individual allows the clues to linger without making peace with AGWỤ, it leads to Ara Agwụ, a mental illness like schizophrenia or Bipolar. Agwụ messages can overwhelm the untrained mind. This is the reason Agwụ is also known as Mmụọ Mkpasa (the spirit of confusion).

AGWỤ is associated with mental illness, personal strife, sadness, depression, grief and misfortune etc. AGWỤ communicates to mortals with a heavy hand. An example of how Agwụ communicate, is through the sensation of hunger. Hunger (agụụ) comes to us as a pain and discomfort and if we are able to read the sensation correctly, it is a call to action. You find a meal that satiates the hunger and enriches the body. You can think clearly after eating. In Igbo language we say (agụụ a tala m) as a way of saying I’m hungry, but this statement translates as Agụụ has bitten me. Eating in this case symbolizes making peace with AGWỤ, which a Dibia or chosen person must eventually do.
AGWỤ points people towards their purpose by destroying the things in their life that do not align with that purpose. The chosen one often witness recurring disaster throughout their lifetime. It tells you that you are doing the wrong things by orchestrating suffering. It causes individuals to drift into isolation and show signs of madness that grow over time.
AGWỤ selects a Dibia through the maternal lineage. This means, if there is AGWỤ Dibia in your maternal lineage, then you or your siblings might be chosen. Even, if your paternal home does not have Dibia in their lineage or have Alusi in the family, it doesn’t matter. AGWỤ selects through the maternal and paternal home.
Once a person is chosen by AGWỤ and ready to make peace with AGWỤ, they are expected to do it by building a shrine to AGWỤ. Unlike the shrine to the Chi, which an individual builds to communicate with their own CHI and is destroyed when the person passes away. The shrine to AGWỤ is permanent and expected to be maintained by your descendants or the descendants of the person chosen by AGWỤ. If the descendants refuse, AGWỤ lashes out and brings misfortune it brought to the original chosen, to the family as a whole. Families that maintain peace with their AGWỤ are blessed with highly creative and intelligent children. It is through these children and these descendants that the blessings of AGWỤ are brought to the world. Therefore, AGWỤ is associated with arts, creativity, and general ingenuity.
When it has been identified that a person is selected by AGWỤ, they have one of 3 choices. The first, is to ignore it and continue with your life, seeking alternative ways to deal with Agwụ tribulations on your life. The second is to reject it, through a ceremony known as ikpe Agwụ. A chosen Dibia identifies the Agwụ that is plaguing him/her. A ceremony is performed to break the bond it has on that individual. It is a way of asking the Agwụ to choose someone else in the family because the choice belongs to the individual that is chosen to decide whether or not the person wants to follow the path Agwụ has predestined for them. It does not come with consequences and allows the individual to live a normal life where the success and consequences of their actions returns back to their own hands without anymore torment of AGWỤ in their life but there is an age limit, the ceremony has to be done before one becomes an Adult. The third, is to accept the call and make peace with agwụ Agwụ in a ceremony called Ịrụ Agwụ.
HOW TO COMMUNICATE WITH AGWỤ.
AFA is a binary code done via different methods. Most means are through casting of shells, precious stones, ugili, sand, cowries etc. The results are decoded by the Dibia, which is read by the Dibia to the individual who comes for divination as a decoded and clear message from the spiritual world. All Afa communication is done through AGWỤ. It is said that AGWỤ is the spirit of Afa . A Dibia interprets AFA for the mortals, the way AGWỤ interprets it for the spirits on the other side. So AFA and AGWU are necessary in connecting you with Deities, ancestors, unborn children, CHINEKE itself, it is almost like a phone or a system of Internet where two computers are communicating with each other in different dimensions. Another means of communicating with AGWỤ is through Meditation. It is important to remember that meditation in igbo cosmology is simply anything that allows you to enter deeper into your mind. Everyone has their method of meditation based on, who they are and igbo culture allows everybody to find their path of communication with their CHI, their AGWỤ, and their universal spiritual guides. This could involve:
Igo mmụọ, sitting in silence, breathing exercises, dreams,
talking to one’s self, taking a walk,
sitting in seclusion etc. All of them are relevant meditative practices. Remember, everyone is different. What works for A might not work for B. Do what works best for you to achieve the end goal as that is between you and your Agwụ.
These moments allow messages from Agwụ to come clearly from the spiritual world to the person as they have pulled far enough from the material world to confine in their inner mind. The Tortoise and Snail are symbols of Agwụ. The tortoise and snail are both creatures that are able to enter into themselves and able to emerge with true wisdom, while the rest of us rely on our fore minds or external observation. There is Afa Mbe which is a form of Afa done with a turtle shell. In ceremonies where Agwụ is invoked, we use Ekwe Mbe the tortoise shell drum to bring the spirit forward. Therefore, the tortoise is seen as a symbol of AGWỤ as well as the OWL, the SQUIRREL, the SNAIL, the IBIS BIRD, the LEOPARD and DOG. If you are aware you have been chosen by AGWỤ to serve as a Dibịa, the next step is to do a ceremony to initiate you as a Dibịa known as ỊRỤ AGWỤ. The ceremony allows the person to become a member of Ụwa Agwụ .

Ịrụ Agwụ centers around an individual making peace with AGWỤ and understanding their purpose as well as the reason for their tribulations and accepting their divinely ordained path as Dibịa. The individual through AGWỤ becomes a source of divine knowledge, insights, and wisdom for the community around them and the world at large. They are the community’s connection to the universal mind and wisdom of the universe as it is unable to be seen by the untrained eye. Dibia is also a negotiator between spirit and person, as well as a doctor, herbalist, healers, midwives and psychologist. Once peace is made with AGWỤ, the Dibia’s powers are unlocked, they are able to read the Sky and therefore serve as their community’s calendar, They are able to read the forest and know which plants heal various ailments of the body without being taught prior. They are able to listen to their intuition and pull from that well that teaches them things that would not otherwise be known, if using the ordinary mind, therefore with that great power comes greater responsibility.
